Description
Dry Cleaners & Erasers
Mechanical or “dry” surface cleaning is always performed prior to any wet treatment to ensure surface dust and soot are not permanently washed into the paper fibers.
- Vulcanized Rubber Sponges: Often called chemical or smoke soot sponges. These are dry, highly cellular natural rubber blocks that roll away dry grime, environmental soot, and dust from book edges, wallpapers, and textiles without using moisture.
- Powdered Gum Erasers: Ground-up crumbly erasers packed inside soft mesh dry-cleaning pads. Squeezing the pad releases fine granules that roll across drawings and manuscripts, lifting graphite and dirt away gently via friction rather than aggressive scrubbing.
- Vinyl & Polymer Erasers: Solid, inert white erasers (such as Staedtler Mars Plastic). They are completely sulfur-free, making them safe to use near silver-based photographic prints without causing chemical tarnishing or yellowing.
