Description
Standard cardboard contains lignin, an organic polymer that generates acids as it decomposes, turning paper yellow and brittle. True archival enclosures circumvent this by using premium materials:
- Acid-Free & Lignin-Free Board: Chemically stable materials ensure the container itself will not stain or degrade the contents.
- Alkaline Buffering: Most archival boxes feature a calcium carbonate buffer to neutralise ambient acids. (Note: Unbuffered variants are used for specific protein-based items like silk or wool).
- PAT-Tested Materials: Top-tier boxes pass the Photographic Activity Test (PAT), an international standard ensuring the box will not cause photographic fading or chemical reactions
