Description
Spider paper (commonly referred to in art conservation as spider tissue or lens paper) is an ultra-thin, near-transparent, and lightweight archival tissue. Despite looking as delicate as a gossamer spider web, it possesses immense tensile strength and does not tear easily when handled.
Core Applications
- Artwork Interleaving: Placed between fine art prints, drawings, and photographs to prevent surface abrasion, smudging, and ink transfer.
- Barrier Tissue: Used in bookbinding and art restoration as a protective barrier when applying wet conservation gels or treatments.
- Fine Printmaking: Utilized by printmakers for specialized chine-collé and delicate multi-layered transfer techniques.
Key Characteristics
- Gossamer Fineness: It provides crucial protection without adding bulk or weight to archived portfolios.
- Acid-Free Preservation: Formulated to prevent chemical degradation, yellowing, or off-gassing over long periods.
- Non-Abrasive Surface: The exceptionally smooth texture ensures that fragile carbon, graphite, or pigment surfaces are never scratched.
